You may have noticed a new procedure when you change the contact information on your domain names. This new 'IRTP' procedure was pushed by ICANN beginning 1st December 2016. It applies to generic top-level domains (ie: .com, .net, etc) and does not apply for country-code domains (ie: .uk, .us, .ca, etc). Below is a quick summary of what it is and how it impacts you.
What Changed?
When you update a domain's contact information (first name, last name, organization, or email address), an approval email is sent out to both the new and old registrant contacts. Before the changes are applied both the old and new registrant must approve the changes. This could mean that you receive 2 separate approval emails to the same email address (for example, if you change a typo in the first or last name fields), which you must approve twice. Failing to have the details approved by both the old and new registrant cancels any changes being made. You have 7 days to approve the changes before the process timesout and changes are cancelled. Once both the old and new registrant approve of the changes, confirmation emails are sent to both the old/new registrant confirming the change was made. Once the change has been made, the domain is locked for 60 days and therefore cannot be transferred to a different registrar during that period.
FAQ:

The change is cancelled. For the changes to apply, it must be approved by both old and new registrant
