Changes to Backups and Restores in Zimbra 10

Zimbra is implementing significant changes to the backup and restore processes starting with Zimbra 10. These changes will affect how backups and restores operate on our platform.

What's Changing

Restoring Deleted Mailboxes

Deleted Mailbox Restore: Deleted mailboxes can be restored up to 14 days from the deletion date.
Live Mailbox Restriction: It will no longer be possible to restore 'live' mailboxes that have not been deleted.

Restoring Lost Items

Dumpster Use: Items deleted from active mailboxes can only be restored using the Zimbra Dumpster. It will no longer be possible to restore a copy of the entire mailbox.
Extended Retention: Dumpster retention will now be a minimum of 15 days for all plans, increased from the previous minimum of 7 days.
Comprehensive Recovery: All Zimbra item types, including emails, contacts, and calendar items, can be restored from the Dumpster.
Future Enhancements: The Zimbra Dumpster feature is expected to be enhanced in future releases to allow item restoration to their previous locations and the ability to restore entire folders.

Restore Examples

Here are some common scenarios based on the new changes:

Restore Lost Items from a Deleted Mailbox: Request a restore of the mailbox with our support team, then log in and use the Dumpster to restore specific items.
Restore Inadvertently Deleted Items: Use the Dumpster to recover items you have accidentally deleted.
Items Deleted Over 15 Days Ago: Restoration will not be possible.
Mailboxes Deleted Over 14 Days Ago: Restoration will not be possible.

Zimbra Dumpster

Using the Zimbra Dumpster is straightforward:

From the Classic UI

Access the Dumpster:
- Right-click on the Trash folder in any tab (email, contacts, calendar, etc.).
- Select "Recover Deleted Items."
Select Items for Restore:
- Locate and select the items you wish to restore. The search feature can be helpful for finding specific items. Multiple items can be selected using shift+click.
- Click the "Recover To" button.
Restore Items:
- Choose the folder to restore the items to and click "OK." The items will be restored immediately.

These changes aim to improve the efficiency and usability of backup and restore functions in Zimbra 10, ensuring a more robust and user-friendly experience.
